Holmer is without a doubt one of Sweden’s most prominent young conductors, with growing international recognition. Now he returns to the podium to lead the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic in music by Franz Schubert and Tebogo Monnakgotla.
Schubert was in his early twenties when he composed his Sixth Symphony. It is often referred to as the “Little C major” to distinguish it from the “Great C major” Symphony No. 9. But the label is misleading – this is jubilant music, full of youthful energy. The beautiful melody in the second movement was later used by famous the beloved Swedish comedy duo Hasse and Tage in their revue Spader Madame! – where it became Donna Juanita, sung by Monica Zetterlund.
Tebogo Monnakgotla is the 2025–26 Season Composer at Konserthuset Stockholm. One of Sweden’s most acclaimed composers, she is represented here with The Robin – music inspired by the song of the European robin and by Selma Lagerlöf’s fairy-tale bird Rödbröst (Redbreast).

He brings the music into the sharpest possible focus – without ever losing its magic. He often appears as both conductor and soloist, as in this concert, which features Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 – one of his most frequently performed and beloved works.
It is framed by Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, one of six concertos composed for Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg-Schwedt – and a true masterpiece of the Baroque era.
This is a concerto grosso, characterised by a small group of soloists set against the full ensemble. In this case, flute, violin and harpsichord/piano take centre stage – and in the beautiful, atmospheric second movement, they perform alone, without the orchestra. These roles are taken by Royal Stockholm Philharmonic members: flautist Andreas Alin and concertmaster Andrej Power.

Unlike the heroic tone of his First Symphony, this second symphony is more introspective and tinged with melancholy.
Elgar himself described it as “a passionate pilgrimage of the heart.” The profoundly moving slow movement is a tribute to the recently deceased King Edward VII. Although it received a mixed response at its premiere, the symphony is now firmly established in the British orchestral repertoire – a kind of soundtrack to the final golden days of Edwardian England, and to the inevitable change that followed.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Danish-born Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, Chief Conductor of the Orchestre National de Lyon, who also continues to enjoy a distinguished parallel career as a violinist at the highest international level.

With remarkable brilliance, he portrays human complexity and restlessness.
His inspirations included the German Romantic author Jean Paul’s novel Titan, which gave the symphony its original subtitle, and above all the folk poetry collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn), which deeply moved Mahler.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by Ryan Bancroft. Since 2023, Bancroft has held the position of Chief Conductor of the orchestra, a choice met with acclaim across the music sphere.

In this work, the orchestra itself becomes the “soloist,” as different sections are brought to the fore and given their moment to shine. Like his Polish predecessors Chopin and Szymanowski, Lutosławski drew inspiration from traditional Polish folk music – but transformed it into something entirely his own.
Folk music runs like a red thread through this concert, which opens with music by Lutosławski’s great inspiration, Hungarian composer Béla Bartók. These Sketches – also known as Pictures – were composed during a time when Bartók was travelling the countryside, collecting folk melodies. The idyllic character of the music reflects this influence.
Between Bartók and Lutosławski, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra performs Suite en miniature by Czech composer Vítězslava Kaprálová. She was on the path to becoming one of Europe’s most significant composers when her life was tragically cut short at the age of 25. Today, her music is performed with increasing frequency, and like the works of both Lutosławski and Bartók, this suite reveals her deep interest in the folk music of her homeland.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Lithuanian conductor Izabelé Jankuaskaité, who made her debut with the orchestra in 2024.

The concert opens with Lili Boulanger’s bright and playful D’un matin de printemps – one of her very last works before her untimely death from Crohn’s disease at just 24 years old.
Inspired by Sandro Botticelli’s painting La Primavera (Spring) from the late 15th century, Debussy sought to compose a springtime piece filled with radiant tone colours. His music aimed to reflect “nature’s strenuous birth of animals and plants, followed by the growing light and the joy reborn into new life.”
A luminous romantic glow also surrounds Saint-Saëns’ Third Symphony – often referred to as the Organ Symphony, as two of its movements include organ. Graceful and atmospheric, it was also his final symphony. “I gave everything I had to this work. What I have done here I will never do again.” The organ part is performed by Ulf Norberg, who also serves as artistic director of the organ matinee series at Konserthuset.
