The women behind the music

The Women Behind the Music is a series of seminars that has been arranged since 2016 at Konserthuset in cooperation with the Association of Swedish Women Composers (Kvinnlig Anhopning av Svenska Tonsättare – KVAST). We will hear works by three composers with different approaches to music, sound art and listening. 

Maria Lithell Flyg (b. 1965) has composed for the Swedish Radio Choir, The Swedish Wind Ensemble, KammarensembleN, Stockholm Saxophone Quartet and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. She is especially interested in music drama and music for the stage, and she composed the chamber opera Kassandra (Högmod) and the environmental opera Någon borde ta tag i det här (“Someone should deal with this”) which was performed at Folkoperan. 

Ylva Skog (b. 1963) intuitively combines and melds styles in her compositions. She takes inspiration from numerous areas, including visual art and literature. From previously using eccentric sounds and instruments in her music, she has recently taken interest in more traditional compositions. She composes for orchestra and chamber music, as well as some electro-acoustic music and compositions for choir.

Helene Hedsund (b. 1963) is a composer with a past in the goth rock band Nevskij Prospekt. She has been active with Elektronmusikstudion (EMS) since the 1990s and is currently pursuing a doctorate in composition at the University of Birmingham. She also holds a master’s degree in sound art from the Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts and a bachelor’s degree in musicology. Her piece Nio Stationer (“Nine Stations”) was performed at Swedish Music Spring 2018.
