Grand final: Songs of Fate and Hope

The world-famous Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer and his chamber orchestra Kremerata Baltica present a new, unique program - Songs of Fate and Hope. In addition to works by Arvo Pärt, Valentyn Silvestrov and Astor Piazzolla, the program features music by contemporary Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian composers written especially for Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica’s latest CD recording.

Guest artists include a children’s choir from the Adolf Fredrik Music Classes. The program culminates with the world premiere of the specially commissioned piece. My evening star arise upon the hill, We shall talk quietly In captivity together inspired by the Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko and composed by Bohdana Frolyak one of the leading Ukrainian female composers.  

Gidon Kremer’s uncompromising artistic philosophy has earned him a worldwide reputation as one of the most original and compelling artists of his generation. His repertoire includes, in addition to the standard classical repertoire, music by leading 20th and 21st century composers. He has paid particular attention to Eastern European composers and performed many important new compositions, several of which are dedicated to him. His name is closely associated with composers such as Alfred Schnittke, Arvo Pärt, Giya Kancheli, Sofia Gubaidulina, Valentin Silvestrov, Luigi Nono, Edison Denisov, Aribert Reimann, Pēteris Vasks, John Adams, Victor Kissine, Michael Nyman, Philip Glass, Leonid Desyatnikov and Astor Piazzolla, whose works he performs with respect for tradition while bringing them to life with freshness and originality.
