Orchestra Baobab formed in 1970 to play at the opening of the famous Baobab Club in Dakar. By combining Afro-Cuban rhythms, Congolese rumba and highlife, the ensemble launched a musical renaissance in 1970s Dakar, making the Senegalese capital one of the liveliest musical cities in the world.
In total, Orchestra Baobab released over 20 albums until they disbanded in 1987. In 2002, they returned with the album “Specialist in All Styles”, which was also the band’s major international breakthrough. Their enormous catalogue of songs spans several decades and the latest album, Tribute to Ndiouga Dieng, was made in honour of deceased band member Ndiouga Dieng. The album was released in 2017 and produced by the legendary team Nick Gold (Buena Vista Social Club) and Jerry Boys.
