Meet author Jeanette Winterson, born in 1959 in Lancashire, England. Jeanette Winterson was adopted and grew up in a strict, nonconformist home, a childhood she used in her semi-autobiographical debut Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit. She and the church parted ways on account of her “unnatural attraction” to women: when Jeanette was found in bed with a female friend, she was immediately thrown out of her home.

In her writing, Jeanette Winterson is interested in exploring how people react in stressful situations, at turning points in life, and upon encountering something unpredictable – when they are jerked out of their habits. It concerns her that people tend to fall into routines and thus shut out new and frightening emotions, and she believes this is usually the cause of life crises.

About Frankissstein

It is a story of the bodies we live in and the bodies we wish we had. In the rainy, chilly summer of 1816 at Lake Geneva, Byron, Shelley and Mary Shelley have gathered together. They entertain themselves with ghost stories and discuss the possibility of bringing a dead person back to life. Ry Shelley, a transgender doctor, arrives at a trade fair in Memphis 200 years later to study the impact of robots on human health. He quickly get to know the beautiful receptionist Claire and Welshman Ron Lord, who produces advanced sex robots – and also meet the charismatic Victor Stein. Jeanette Winterson has created a playful twist on Mary Shelley’s classic Frankenstein. It is a book about AI and gender fluidity.

The talk will be held in English and in collaboration with Wahlström & Widstrand. Frankissstein has been translated into Swedish by Lena Fries-Gedin.
