Curious Classics – Yulduz Turdieva

Already at the age of 12, Yulduz Turdieva was considered a rising star. Today she is one of the biggest musicians of Central Asia and has been acclaimed for her unparalleled ability to present the traditional music of the region.

She has mastered multiple musical styles, such as Central Asian Shashmaqam, Mavregi, Persian, Arabic and Turkish maqam. These styles are typically considered so challenging that it takes half a lifetime to master them.

There is no mistaking that Yulduz Turdieva is driven by great dedication to the ancient musical traditions of the region, but she is one of few women to appear on stage in Uzbekistan. Meanwhile, she is internationally acclaimed and praised, and has performed concerts in France, Germany, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Iran, Israel and many other countries.

At this evening’s concert, she will be accompanied by Ulugbek Temirov, who plays the common percussion instrument in Uzbek musical tradition known as the doyra, a handheld frame drum called a daf in Iran. Rasulov Uktamjon contributes masterful performance on the national instruments of Uzbekistan, the tanbur, dutor and sato, all of which are stringed instruments and variations of a long-necked lute both with and without frets.
