Soup with Quintet

Passionate music with a citrus twist.

“There is something exquisite about the construction of a common orange,” says American violinist, singer and composer Caroline Shaw (born 1982). One of the most common varieties is the Valencia orange – juicy, sweet, and with a thin peel. “Nature is so simple, and yet so extraordinary.” In her piece Valencia, the image of an orange is evoked through gently undulating overtones and slowly flowing chords and melodies.

The Piano Quintet in C minor is one of Gabriel Fauré’s final works – music that bears all the wisdom of a composer born while Chopin and Berlioz were still active, yet who lived long enough to witness the birth of twentieth-century modernism. This quintet is full of passion and joy, despite the fact that by this time Fauré was almost completely deaf and aware that he had little time left.

Four string players from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra are joined here by pianist Terés Löf – one of Sweden’s most distinguished pianists, who has performed as a soloist with many of the country’s orchestras. She has appeared at Konserthuset Stockholm on several occasions, both as an orchestral soloist and in chamber music concerts.
