Bruch’s first violin concerto

Max Bruch’s concerto in G-minor is one of the most beloved violin concertos in classical music. With magnificently beautiful passages, this piece has an irresistible romantic charge. The brilliant finale is a technical challenge.

This concert will be Dutch Noa Wildschut’s (b. 2001) debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. She was nominated for the ECHO Rising Stars 2019/20 season by Concertgebouw Amsterdam, but her scheduled concert at Konserthuset Stockholm was cancelled because of the pandemic. Now, when she takes the stage, the orchestra will be led by Norwegian Tabita Berglund, one of the winners of the Neeme Järvi Prize 2018 at the Gstaad Conducting Academy. Berglund is also making her debut with the orchestra; a scheduled concert in April 2020 was cancelled.

The concert begins with music by Louise Farrenc, a leading name of the nineteenth-century French music scene. She was active as a composer and was also a brilliant concert pianist, and a professor for thirty years at the historic conservatory in Paris. Propelled by an irresistible energy, her Overture in E-flat major is filled with melodic imagination and a harmonious sensibility. It is also evident that she was a great admirer of Beethoven.

Edvard Grieg was tasked with composing the music to Ibsen’s drama Peer Gynt. After the premiere in 1876, Grieg compiled a few suites from the incidental music. We will hear the beloved pieces Morning Mood, Solveig’s Song, Anitra’s Dance and In the Hall of the Mountain King.
