Igor Levit is one of his generation’s most important pianists (he was born in 1987) and he regularly appears on all of the major concert stages worldwide. He has performed at Konserthuset Stockholm on several occasions, each time with Beethoven on the programme. When he returns for the major Beethoven anniversary, he will do so emphatically – in eight concerts, he will perform all 32 of Beethoven’s piano sonatas.
In the summer of 1814, Beethoven was at the peak of his success. He had not composed a piano sonata in nearly 5 years, but strengthened by both attention and the artistic successes of his orchestral pieces, he composed the melodically beautiful yet aesthetically forward-looking Sonata in E Minor. For a period of time, he had been moving towards a new artistic phase and the subsequent Sonata No. 28 stands at the artistic threshold of his very last sonatas.
The Hammerklavier Sonata holds a nearly mystical status for many people. It is also a universe of moodiness, expression and ideas: symphonic and orchestral, monumental and majestic, introverted and dreamy, distant and improvisational. This complex music with intricate rhythms and daring harmonics is permeated by unprecedented concentration. It was advertised in the Wiener Zeitung as a piece which “stands out from all other creations by this master”.
