Genre: Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra

Summer concert

Life-affirming music by Antonín Dvorák, Elfrida Andrée and Mozart.

Antonín Dvorák had enormous international successes in his life and crowned his career with an appointment as a professor of composition in New York. Before his departure to the New World, America, he composed his life-affirming Eighth Symphony, which emerged during long walks through forests and fields. This nature-inspired music is filled with joy and effervescent energy.

Elfrida Andrée composed a large quantity of chamber music and several superb symphonic works. While following in the tracks of her teacher, Ludvig Norman, she was also deeply influenced by the music of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Schubert. She was the first woman in Sweden to graduate as an organist and also became the first female cathedral organist, with a position at Gothenburg Cathedral. She was also a conductor and led at least one famous performance of her sublimely majestic Concert Overture in D Major.

As a soloist in Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 1, we will hear the 2019 winner of the Carl Nielsen International Competition on flute, French Joséphine Olech. Since 2017 she is principal flutist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Alma Mahler Kammerorchester.

Ryan Bancroft – winner of the Malko Competition for young conductors in 2018 – will lead the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
