Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra

The Leipzig Gewandhausorchester is one of the world’s most prominent orchestras. It is also one of the oldest. Through the years, the orchestra has presented the world premiere of works by the absolute biggest composers – Beethoven, Schumann, Schubert, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Brahms, Bruckner and Wagner.

During the 2017/18 season, the orchestra is celebrating an impressive 275 years with a huge anniversary tour led by its new chief conductor, star conductor Andris Nelsons. His predecessors as “Gewandhauskapellmeister” include greats such as Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Bruno Walter, Kurt Masur and Herbert Blomstedt.

Both Andris Nelsons and the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester have visited Konserthuset Stockholm before, but never together. As they tackle the symphonic frontier of Mahler and his Symphony No. 1, it is naturally an event above and beyond the ordinary.

We will also hear the incredible Swedish trumpet player Håkan Hardenberger in Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s jazzy and original trumpet concerto entitled Nobody Knows the Trouble I See. Hardenberger is active worldwide and is considered by many to be the world’s leading trumpet player. In addition, we will hear a brand new work by the highly acclaimed Latvian composer Andris Dzenitis.
