Bergman and the music

Music was a lifelong love for Ingmar Bergman, but he considered this love to be unrequited. Still, it may not have been unhappy – music followed him throughout his life, and he followed music. In his Summer radio programme in 2004, Bergman asked, “Where does music come from? Why do people make music?” The listener response was the largest in the history of the Summer programme.

In this presentation, journalist Marie Nyreröd, a close friend of Bergman, shows clips from some of the films and discusses the music. We will then hear the same pieces performed by some of Sweden’s foremost musicians. They include Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E-flat major from Fanny and Alexander; Chopin’s Prelude in A-minor from Autumn Sonata; and variation 25 from Bach’s Goldberg Variations from The Silence with Ingrid Thulin.
