The overture to Mozart’s opera Idomeneo begins with a series of powerful orchestral blasts, foreshadowing the coming storm. Italian conductor and early music expert Luca Guglielmi leads the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in a selection of music from this dramatic opera.

Passion and love, envy and jealousy are some of the ingredients in Mozart’s opera about the king of Crete, Idomeneo. The action plays out soon after the Trojan War, some time in the 1200s BC. After conquering the Trojans, Idomeneo sails across the sea back to Crete, and we can truly hear the swelling waves in the billowing cascades of the violins. But the ship encounters a storm and capsizes. Idomeneo asks Neptune, god of the sea, for help and promises him anything in return, if Neptune will ensure he and his crew safely reach the shore. But Neptune has terms...
In addition to the overture, this suite from Idomeneo also includes the powerful and lively march, and the elegant and graceful ballet from the opera. Mozart was just twenty-four when he composed the opera, which was a success at its premiere in Munich in 1781.
