Johannes Brahms’s Symphony No. 3 is a richly melodic and sometimes mysterious work – music that gives subtle nods to both Schumann and Wagner. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by its Conductor Laureate Alan Gilbert.
German pianist Martin Helmchen has guested the orchestra on several occasions. He is admired not only for his incredible technique, but also for his sensitivity and personal interpretations. Here, Helmchen is the soloist in Mozart’s beloved, masterfully elegant Piano Concerto No. 22, which provides – especially in the last movement – echoes of the opera the Marriage of Figaro from the same era, around 1785.
