Franz Liszt took piano playing to brand new heights, and as a composer, he never stopped exploring the possibilities of music. Art and literature were essential sources of inspiration and his three suites, Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage), are associated with Goethe’s bildungsroman, Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, about a young merchant.
Les Jeux d’eau à la Villa d’Este, from the third piece, is a musical description of the beautiful garden at Villa d’Este, a palace in the town of Tivoli, near Rome.
