In Monday at Last, we meet violinist Cecilia Zilliacus and cellist Kati Raitinen as they perform both newer and older music, often joined by guest artists. On this occasion, we hear them in duo and solo pieces. The programme opens with Canon for violin and cello, written by Jean Sibelius in 1889. It is possible that this small piece was composed for the composer himself to perform on the violin, together with his brother Christian, who was a cellist.
This is followed by two works by the Russian-born American composer Lera Auerbach. In Three Dances in the Old Style for violin and cello (2020), Auerbach plays with our expectations of what this ”old style” might entail, as the seemingly innocent music is disrupted by unexpected interjections. In Lonely Suite ”Ballet for a Lonely Violinist” (2022), she explores solitude by allowing the violinist to engage in dialogues with oneself – confronting one’s own fears with no escape.
Finally, we hear music by the Czech composer Erwin Schulhoff (1894–1942), who tragically died of tuberculosis in a Nazi concentration camp in Bavaria. His Duo for Violin and Cello, dedicated to his compatriot Leos Janácek ”with deep admiration”, carries echoes of Czech folk music, and it shifts between dance-like, expressive passages and moments of melancholy and contemplation. The piece was composed in Venice in 1925.
