RSPO Orchestra Academy

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra Academy is a special academic programme for young musicians.
Since 2016, an orchestra academy has been associated with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. This advanced special academic programme is for young musicians. Teaching is conducted on-site at Konserthuset Stockholm and in partnership with the School of Music in Piteå at Luleå University of Technology.
The programme is focused on an international target audience and the formal name is the RSPO Orchestra Academy (Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra – RSPO).
The supervisors and instructors are primarily section leaders from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. The programme includes individual instrument instruction, orchestral performance, and chamber music performance.
There are also “mock auditions” in which participants get to practice the various steps involved with applying for a position in an orchestra, as well as seminars by experienced teachers from the School of Music at Luleå University of Technology. The programme examiner is conductor Petter Sundkvist, professor at the Luleå University of Technology.
A holistic approach is essential – to give students the chance to experience what life and work are like as part of a professional symphony orchestra. The Orchestra Academy also performs several chamber music concerts in Grünewald Hall, which are always free. The Orchestra Academy has also performed the world premieres of new compositions.
Another aspect of a holistic approach is refining skills beyond playing – such as stage presence and the ability to present the music in an inviting and compelling way.
The orchestra academy also carries out collaborations with other players – read more under Collaborations and Partnerships.

Her Piano Quintet in F-sharp minor, written in 1907, is an emotionally charged and dramatic work with influences from Brahms.
We also hear Amfortas’ Dream for winds and piano, composed by Johan Ullén, who himself takes part as pianist. The music is inspired by the character Amfortas from Wagner’s Parsifal – an opera with deeply religious and philosophical themes.
Francis Poulenc was a member of the French group Les Six, and his Sextet for winds and piano is a true burst of joy. Here, elegance, humour, and captivating melodies come together. It showcases Poulenc’s typically neoclassical style, infused with unmistakable French charm.
Since 2016, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra has hosted an ”Orchestra Academy”. The international RSPO Orchestra Academy is a one-year, advanced academic programme for young musicians. Under the guidance of the section leaders from the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the Piteå School of Music, the musicians receive intensive training individually, in chamber music, and orchestral playing. They also showcase their talents through a series of public chamber music concerts – such as this one featuring this year’s academy musicians.

Millesgården Museum, in collaboration with Konserthuset Stockholm, is once again hosting outdoor concerts at Millesgården. Experience music, art, and good food in perfect harmony.
The doors to the sculpture park open well before the concert, allowing visitors to experience the magical Millesgården in its early summer attire. Enjoy a glass of bubbly or some light refreshments at the summer café outside Anne’s House, then find a nice spot to settle down and enjoy the music.
At each event, an ensemble performs music carefully selected to suit both the location and the time when the Milles couple lived there.

They also showcase their talents through a series of public chamber music concerts – such as this one featuring this year’s academy musicians. This finale is more than just a traditional chamber concert – we hear Mahler’s Fourth Symphony in a version for a smaller ensemble, led by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra’s Chief Conductor, Ryan Bancroft!
Symphony No. 4 is both simple and sophisticated; it is like dewdrops on a flower, suddenly shimmering with thousands of colours as the sunlight touches them – as Mahler himself described the melodies of the first movement. The symphony has been called “heavenly blue.” The first three movements lead to a final movement with a soprano solo: Wir geniessen die himmlischen Freuden – We revel in the heavenly joys. It is open, bright, lyrical, yet also playful, with themes and sonorities from the earlier movements reappearing.
The soloist is the Swedish soprano Karin Mobacke, who in recent years has been gaining increasing attention on the country’s opera and concert stages. She made her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2023 in a concert performance of Johann Gottlieb Naumann’s national opera Gustaf Wasa.
